IDP Relief Project (Kenya)
From the end of December 2007 to early 2008, Kenya experienced one of the greatest traumas that the country had ever witnessed. Following a viciously contested election the then President Kibaki (coming up for a second term) was pronounced the winner. The announcement was met by demonstrations, mainly staged by supporters of the opposition leader, Raila Odinga. Clashes between the followers of both leaders left at least 1,000 people dead, conservatively speaking and more than 600,000 displaced – almost all of them internally. This resulted in a humanitarian crisis in which children, women and men were caught up in homelessness, dispossession, hunger, diseases and many other basic human needs.
UWAO stepped in and through the group’s organization efforts managed to raise $1,861 from 6 individual members’ collection and then donated $500 from UWAO funds, making the entire donation $2,361. The money was sent through All Saints Cathedral Church Council and St. Paul’s University – two of the local organizations in Kenya involved in fundraising for the IDP (Internally Displaced People). Through UWAO’s effort, some IDP survivors were provided with water, food, clothing, shelter and other needs facing them. UWAO’s intervention was a part of the organization’s commitment to assisting needy constituencies, locally and internationally.
